We're starting a thing! Tip Tuesday! Every single Tuesday we're gonna post a neat makery tip - hold us to it! Yell at us in our DMs if we fail to post 'em on time, because we have a whole backlog of stuff we wanna share!
This week Hench is showing you how she made a big chonky rake tool suitable for large flat surfaces out of junk we had laying around the shop, as her old rake tool was way too small and delicate for the project she's working on. Great for quickly smoothing out surfaces! Why use Free Form Sculpt? Because we have big tubs of it in the shop; you can use whatever epoxy putty you like!

So we started putting a quick cosplay cost breakdown video together last week for this project, and it turned into a whole thing. Hopefully it's informative/illuminating! We tried to pick one of our cosplay projects with a bit of a different process.

Huge, huge thanks to very public facing cosplay and propmaking professionals like @lightning_cosplay and @kamuicosplay for spearheading this trend. Transparency in just how much time and effort our craft takes is fantastic, and only serves to strengthen our whole industry.

This sort of pricing calculation isn't a quote by the way, and if we were to do this project as a job we'd be factoring in things like filming (which can sometimes double production times), editing, communication with clients, research & development, curing times taking up our limited workspace, and all the glorious social media stuff which is a whole industry unto itself.

We are still so pumped that @bethesda_anz asked us to make this and the Shield Saw (see our previous post for that), because boy, are we hyped for DOOM: The Dark Ages!

If you were at @paxaus, you may have seen (or held!) our Iron Flail in person! For everyone else, here it is, in all its spongy, convention-safe glory! Cacodemon obliteration guaranteed!

So, we are pretty thrilled to be able to reveal the shield saw (and flail) that we made for @bethesda_anz! Those of you who were at @paxaus might have had a sneaky preview of them and maybe even been able to personally hoist the hefty mass of steel, aluminium, plastic and rubber that makes up the DOOM Slayers arsenal!
Featuring an enormous planetary gear mech designed by Scrap, and paint work by Hench!

We realised the other day that none of the Doom Slayer photos we did with the incredible @zerolightphotography during @wellingtoncpf were on this account! Oops! It was originally made in the Scrap Shop Props days in 18 days for AMD, but the highlight was definitely the @bethesda_anz pre-pax party. I am pretty sure photos exist of me dancing like an idiot while sweating like hell in a full body foam suit.

I was just going to post this to stories because we have some lovely, much more curated things to post to our feed shortly, but I never really showed off the quick prop I made to go with my Halsin cosplay when I entered the Championships of Cosplay and it's kinda neat, so here it is!
I made the Sussur Sickle in three days (including print time) because I really wanted a prop to accompany my costume and I didn't have a heap of time. The body of the sickle is resin printed in a custom tinted resin mix, and the baubles pressure cast in resin with some embedded mylar sheet for iridescence.
I'm not nearly as strong a 3D modeller as Scrap, so I used the in-game model and made a displace map with the textures in Blender, followed by a quick sculpt pass.
I hollowed out some channels inside and left a cavity big enough for a USB power bank that powers an itty bitty Arduino ATTiny86 Digispark with some custom code and a length of 2813 addressable LED strip, all of which is accessed by popping the bauble out of the bottom.
It's a bit rough compared to the usual props work I do with Scrap, but for three days and a very low budget, I was pretty happy!
Since I'm now representing Australia with this costume and it's probably a good idea to make something a little bit nicer for Chicago, I'll be building an entirely different prop, but this one will look lovely on the wall in my workroom.
